This book has a strange and weird ending. Jonas (the main character), and his little brother (who is supposed to be terminated) run away from their Settlement (as they like to call it). They are really cold, and they see light and hear laughing voices and happiness. Earlier in the book, Jonas has been given a memory of people laughing and being happy. So you don't know if Jonas really does hear the laughter, or if he's going to die.
I think he lives, because only a bad author would kill off the main character like that at the end. And this is a good author, so Jonas must have lived. Lois Lowry is a good author. She tells the story nicely. I think the author writes about what the world might become, in a hundred years. If you are weak, people get killed off. People ask "for release" and are given release, which means they are killed off, but they don't realize they are going to be killed. One of The Giver's former students, named Rosemary, asked for release after The Giver put some scary memories in her mind, because she couldn't take it anymore. I think it's bad that they do this because they don't really tell people. They don't explain that being released is the same as being killed.
Also, if you're a Birth Mother, the person you give birth to, you won't know your daughter or son. Every birth mother gives three births, but then they don't live with their kids. Every kid is adopted. They won't let the women keep their kids.
I think I'd put this book about fifth on my list.

ReplyDeleteI think the book your mom is now reading about the girl in China may be the winner for 2010, however, I have not read it or any of the other candidates so I really can not comment. In any case you sound like a kid who has heard many stories (or am I just stirring the POT - heh heh) I think that because of your reading and other adventures you and your mom could begin writing the Newbery winner for 2011. Here's the deal. Many of Newberry books are not rockem sockem boy's adventure stories. The Newberry's need fresh ideas that will get boys age 10 - 15 interested in reading again. I am not talking about Harry Potter type stories either. Harry is somewhat of a Nerd, moreover the stories have too much magic and not enough believability in my view. What about a kid who has adventures here in our real world? Write back and tell me if I am wrong. Also tell your mom to ask sister what book she read with Pa at the library yesterday - both of them should remember as it was read to them both at about the same time in their life and both really liked it. Oh well, that's all for now it's raining outside tell your mom "nasty stuff water"

Hi martin,
ReplyDeleteI thought the end of The Giver was totally weird as well...I choose to think Jonas lives, too. You're right, Lois Lowry IS a wonderful teller of tales. And "Pa" is also correct...you and your mom should write a book about a boy who has "believable" adventures. But I disagree that Harry is a nerd...isn't that the female character, Hermione? But he is kinda "normal." There used to be lots of books about kick-butt boys- Johnny Tremain, Daniel Boone, Call it Courage, I, Juan de Peraja...but girls have ruled lately. Something to think about...or, if you can't make it for 2011, maybe sometime in the near future?
I am excited to see what you think about the recent winners...
Hello Martin I'm from Ms.Crabtree's. She intoduced us to your blog. Its amazing you would be reading a lot of books at you're age:) I read the book THE GIVER in 8th grade and I do think its pretty weird...but the fact that Jonas's world is completely different from ours is really interesting. After reading the book, our teacher made us make up our own ending and I made Jonas live and find people. They welcome Jonas into the family:)
